Manager, Technical Writing
Oracle’s NetSuite global business unit is looking for a strong, innovative Manager of Technical Publications to lead a diverse, global team of technical writers to document APIs and developer tools for a hosted, enterprise business application. An ideal candidate will have excellent communication and collaboration skills, extensive experience writing developer documentation, substantial technical knowledge, a strong customer focus, and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple writers and their documentation deliverables in a fast-paced development environment.
Work with development and product management teams, as well as external and internal customers, to understand product documentation needs. Convert the results into the team roadmap, goals, objectives, and resource requirements.
Contribute part-time as a writer to product documentation and be an active member of product scrum teams.
Drive strategy, workflow, and direction of documentation deliverables to provide the best customer experience.
Assist team members with activities related to defining deliverables, accessing resources, scoping, tracking, issue resolution and mitigation, and team dynamics.
Evolve internal team standards, procedures, processes, and best practices to ensure efficient resource utilization and professional, accurate, and user-friendly product documentation.
Manage team workload to maximize efficiency and ensure writers can successfully support the documentation needs of agile development teams. Shift resources to match changes in business priorities as required.
Develop the team of writers; recruit and manage staff.
Bachelor’s degree and 10-12 years of experience as a Technical Writer and Technical Writing Manager, or equivalent experience
Attention to detail; excellent English skills; and proficiency in proofreading/editing, writing, and verbal communication
Outstanding collaboration skills: a track record of successfully working with product managers, developers, testers, and technical writers to deliver quality documentation
Excellent strategic thinking, time management, and prioritization skills
Experience managing and guiding writers while making difficult tradeoff decisions
Skillful at coordinating multiple projects and writers to meet tight deadlines and adapting to changing priorities
Extensive experience working with remote teams
Experience working with cross-functional teams across product development lifecycle
Experience leading documentation projects and managing the work of individual writers
Experience writing technical online help and user manuals for a developer audience, including API reference
Experience learning, using, and writing about scripting languages and developer tools for business applications
Familiarity with standard tools used in technical documentation, including help authoring tools and graphics software
Knowledge of ArborText Epic Editor and XML preferred
Detailed Description and Job Requirements
Responsible for directing the activities of a staff that creates, develops, plans, writes and edits operational, instructional, maintenance, test or user manuals for paper, multimedia or web-based publications. Supervises the timely design, production and delivery/completion of product documentation and document sets.
As a manager in the technical writing division, you will lead a team that will design and write conceptually complex parts of new documentation. Recognize design dependencies with related product documentation and/or products and propose design changes or new designs. Provide subject matter guidance Company-wide to all levels.
Leads a specialized area which may have diverse functional elements. Frequently interacts with supervisors and/or functional peer group managers. May interact with senior management. Demonstrated leadership and people management skills. Strong communication skills, analytical skills, thorough understanding of technical documentation. BS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. A of one year of software engineering or related experience.
