Cengage Learning Intellectual Property (IP) Analyst in San Francisco, California


As a member of the Legal Team, the Intellectual Property (IP) Acquisitions Team serves the product team and the corporation in the development of all Cengage products, by facilitating the selection of content and acquisition of inbound intellectual property and licenses in a digital forward environment. Our primary mission is to increase speed to market of Cengage products by simplifying and expediting the rights acquisition processes while maintaining compliance to legal policy, through excellence in planning, efficiency in management, effective consulting and partnering with key stakeholders.

Reporting to Executive Director, IP Acquisitions, the IP Analyst provides analysis, recommendations, consultation and support for key stakeholders of the IP Acquisition activities for assigned disciplines, and maintains compliance with Cengage Legal rights policies. This discipline focused position serves as a key player in the development of Cengage product lines, and acts as primary liaison for assigned discipline teams in IP acquisition analysis, planning and recommendations.


  • Proactively provides guidance to Product Planning and Development teams regarding IP acquisition activities and budgetary requirements for projects within assigned discipline list.

  • Exhibits the personality, drive, and leadership skills to steer authors, content developers, and product teams towards savvy content selection choices during development process.

  • Develops in-depth knowledge of discipline product lines, relationships with internal and external teams and authors, and frequently used rights holders within product lines.

  • Plans, analyzes, and identifies workflow issues, source issues, or team issues that potentially jeopardize project schedules.

  • Reviews new and reuse insert requests and logs supplied for products to proactively identify potential issues, and make recommendations to improve speed to market and cut costs.

  • Demonstrates creative problem solving and implements creative solutions.

  • Monitors industry in assigned discipline to identify developments and/or trends in field, potential content sources.

  • Identifies key rights holders for discipline and makes recommendations to Development partners regarding partnership opportunities.

  • Designs project plan; launches project by actively participating in planning and launch meetings; initiates permissions acquisitions work by launching project with assigned Permissions Project Manager.

  • Monitors acquisitions project status, consults with Permissions Project Manager to answer permissions related questions, and serves as primary point of escalation for permissions issues.

  • Works with Permissions Project Manager to ensure timely project close and delivery of rights.

  • Makes recommendations around process and systems improvement.

  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with vendor partners.

  • Works closely with Development partners in establishing clear legal guidelines and good content choices for emerging digital learning platforms and products.

  • Performs other duties as needed to meet the goals of the department.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in risk analysis and interpretation of Intellectual Property (IP).

  • Working knowledge of IP acquisition and clearance processes, corporate copyright policy and strategy, including knowledge of fair use and public domain parameters.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate in a variety of styles and settings.

  • Exhibits customer service and leadership skills in order to persuade and steer teams toward desired outcomes.

  • Ability to analyze complex data and project information and make recommendations that comply with both legal requirements and business need.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and initiatives.

  • Relationship building skills and the ability to deliver difficult messages tactfully.

  • Proven ability in figuring out the process necessary to get things done.

  • Ability to use logic and common sense to solve problems with effective solutions.

  • Intermediate knowledge and proven use of MS Office applications with an emphasis on Excel.

  • Experience using various database systems.


  • Experience with digital learning platforms and content.
